"Like lots of boaters I faced the dilemma of whether to buy a new or
secondhand boat.
I wanted a big fibreglass cruiser that could take my wife and three
children cruising in safety and comfort.
After heaps of research I acquired a 1985 model Randell 32. The
ultimate objective was to refurbish the boat to our own
specifications, but in the meantime we were going to get some use
from the Randell.
The boat was fitted with a pair of competitive 165hp sterndrives
with about 1500 hours on the clocks. After about 18 months one of
the engines needed some serious work. It was time to start the total
refurbishment program and that involved the hull, interior and
engines.
In the engine department I compared everything on the market. Yanmar
diesels easily won out due to the superior power output of 230 hp,
their lighter weight and smaller, more compact installation
envelope. So the old engines came out and a pair of Yanmar 4
LHA-STZP with MerCruiser Bravo II drives slipped in.
The improvement with the Yanmar sterndrives on board was staggering.
Top speed went up from
19 knots to 30 knots and the hull planes a lot flatter now. We can
cruise comfortably at 23 knots where we used to bump along at 16
knots.
The biggest improvement was in fuel consumption. The two old 165
engines used to use 60 litres of fuel per hour for both engines. The
Yanmars use just 40 litres per hour for the pair.
The significance for better family cruising is massive. Before I
could get less than 250nm cruising from the tanks and now it is more
than 460nm, a huge increase in range of 84%.
With a 39% increase in power, 57% increase in performance, 33%
reduction in fuel usage and massive increase in cruising range . I
couldn't ask for anything more from my Yanmar diesel sterndrives.
Now I am going to put in additional water tanks so that our family
can cruise places like the Whitsundays and no longer have to worry
about the next fuel stop."
