"My Halvorsen 43 is something of a classic. Built in 1971 the fibreglass hull and deck is fitted out with heaps of teak, so she is a rare old girl.

She is also a very strong but heavy boat, weighing in at a beefy 25 tonnes. When I purchased Kublai Khan the pair of original 200hp shaftdrive diesels could only get my boat to 12 knots. I needed more speed and I needed more power.

After spending 6 months checking out the engine market, I decided on a pair of 420hp Yanmar 6CX(M) - ETE as re-powers. The Yanmar engines looked the part, they presented as though they had been purpose built for marine use, not just diesels with bits added on for boating.

I was also looking for engines that delivered good torque all the way through the rev band. The Yanmar 6CX(M) - ETE give good early torque and it builds all the way through to 2700 rpm which is important because the Halvorsen is so heavy.

Now with the new Yanmar engines on board I now cruise at 18 knots with the engines ticking over at 2200 rpm. I've gone from 400 hp to 840 hp, 12 knots to 26 knots at full throttle and cut the fuel bill by up to 30%! The performance of the Yanmars is amazing.

The Yanmar engines punch the Halvorsen up onto the plane without any turbo lag and the noise reduction under power is a great benefit to everyone on board. At 2700 rpm you can still hold a conversation.

With the fresh Yanmar engines on board, their amazing fuel economy will now let me undertake with complete confidence, an extended cruise and game fishing trip through the Whitsundays."
