"I repowered with Yanmar and cut the
fuel bill by 40%"
"Sometimes a boat is so good, you simply can't part with it. I'm an
avid game fisherman and I purchased 'Betty Anne III' in 1986. It's a
Penguin plate alloy boat, built in the West and is an honest 25
footer.
I thought about selling up and buying another boat, but nothing I
saw came close to my trusty Penguin. I decided to re-power, rather
than replace the whole rig. The original Renault diesel engine had
1200 hours up, so I set about finding the ideal replacement
sterndrive. I read all the magazines, went to the boat shows and
spoke to the major engine manufacturers.
Ultimately my local Yanmar dealer at Bermagui, Craigh Hurst, spoke
to me about the options. He sells a few different brands of diesel
engines so I really took notice of his advice. He suggested that I
fit the Yanmar 4LHA HTZE, the 150hp diesel engine with the
MerCruiser leg.
I had already checked out this engine and was familiar with it. It
fitted my needs perfectly. slightly more power than the old Renault,
an easy fit with minimal changes to the engine bay and just slightly
heavier than the old engine because I choose to fit the larger Bravo
2 drive.
The changeover took only 6 days in total to complete. I hardly
missed out on any fishing at all. With a change-over cost of around
$35,000, it was a whole lot cheaper than the cost of a new boat.
The difference in performance with the new Yanmar was quite
astounding. The four cylinder Yanmar gets "Betty Anne III" up on the
plane quicker and the acceleration on the water is much better. With
the Bravo 2 leg, the boat trim is now greatly improved.
After the engine swap, the boat with Yanmar power has a whole new
lease of life. I love the safety of the Yanmar diesel, the lack of
black smoke and quiet operation.
But the biggest difference is in the fuel bill. The Yanmar is
amazingly efficient averaging just 6 litres per hour... the Renault
returned 10 litres an hour. That's a massive fuel saving of 40% and
when you run 18 nautical miles offshore regularly, the difference is
appreciated at the pump back in port."
