"Yanmar repower delivers more speed / less fuel"
"My Bertram 28 was built in 1985. When I acquired Jennifer E in
2001, I knew that the original diesel engines were on their last
legs and repowering was inevitable. Jennifer E was underpowered and
we virtually ran every-where at wide open throttle. Even then, we
were lucky to get a top speed of 18 knots.
But I still got a season and a half out of the old engines, before
one died. I had been taking a lot of interest over the intervening
time in engine options and was greatly influenced by what I had read
and seen about Yanmar.
Ultimately I settled on a pair of Yanmar 4LHA-STP engines, a neat,
compact pair of diesels that develop 230hp each. For the Bertram
re-power project, the entire drive train was replaced, the engines
along with the gearboxes, prop shafts, skegs and props. The Yanmar
dealer did a fabulous job on the repower - it was an efficient and
professional fit up.
You could not believe the difference. The power had gone up from 190
hp per engine to 230 hp per engine with top speed leaping to 33
knots. An 83% increase in speed was accompanied by a decent saving
in fuel consumption, plummeting to just 11.52 litres per engine per
hour.
Thanks to the Yanmar engines, I am now saving heaps at the fuel
wharf and can now travel much further on the 750 litres of fuel on
board.
Out on the ocean these engines are just beautiful to use. They idle
well down low for trolling, are smooth through the range and there's
no hint of black smoke. When you lean on the throttles, you can feel
the turbos kick in and then you're off with a big surge of power!
All up, I am a very happy Yanmar owner."
