"Yanmar repower has rejuvenated my Bertram 28"

"I had owned my 1984 model Bertram 28 for just two years and thought that the old girl would benefit from an engine rebuild. The six cylinder BMW diesels were original equipment and rated at about 160hp each. They were struggling to get the Bertram to 20 knots and after the rebuilds performance was not much better.

After researching the repower engine market, I settled on a pair of Yanmar 4LHM STE engines. I was impressed with the power to weight ratio and their low fuel consumption figures.

It was important to me that the repower could be done easily, and as Yanmar engines are currently being fitted to the latest model of this boat, I knew the engines would go in easily and perform really well.

Craigh Hurst Engineering at Bermagui is an authorised Yanmar agent and he did a first class job of removing the old BMW's and fitting the latest technology, Yanmar 4LHM STE's. The repower was quick and easy as the pair of shaft drive engines slipped in and lined up beautifully.

I fish off Bermagui all year round with my sons
and our mates. We head up to 40 miles offshore chasing Marlin, Yellow Fin Tuna and then some bottom bashing.

The difference that the Yanmar engines have made to my offshore fishing has been amazing. Whereas previously we struggled to get to 20 knots on the dial, it now punches onto the plane in an instant and flies along at 30 knots. It's been an amazing transformation.

The boat is much quieter to fish from and the fuel consumption is less than the old engines, even though I've picked up more than 10 knots in performance. The Yanmars are actually physically smaller, 4 cylinder versus 6 cylinder and develop 230 hp against 160 hp.

My Bertram 28 is a classic blue water game fishing rig and with the Yanmars now fitted, it has made my fishing much more enjoyable.
